How to Write Summary of the Poem
(For the Students of English Department)
Definition of Summary: Summary মানে সংক্ষেপন বা সংক্ষেপ করা। অর্থাৎ মূল ভাব কি তা লেখা। এখানে আমাদের একটি কবিতার মূল্ভাবটি লিখতে হবে। নিচে কবিতার মুল ভাব লিখার কতিপয় নিয়ম দেওয়া হলঃ
- কবিতাটি বার বার পড়তে হবে।
- Summary টি নিজের ভাষায় লিখতে হবে। এক্ষেত্রে summary টি শুরু করা যেতে পারে The poem deals with........(মূল বিষয়)
- Summary এর ভাষা হবে সহজ, সরল ও প্রাঞ্জল।
- চলিত ভাষা ব্যবহার করা করা যাবে না।
- Summary টি হবে মুল অংশের তিনভাগের একভাগ (কিন্তু নাম্বারের তুলোনায় সেটি ছোট হয়ে যায় বিধায় আমরা মুলত কবিতাটি কে বিশ্লেষন করব। এক্ষেত্রে এটিকে আমরা বলতে পারি Critical Summary।
- Summary তে অলংকার বা কবিতার লাইন দেয়া যাবে না।
- বিরাম চিহ্নের ব্যাপারে সচেতন হবে।
- Summary টি সাধারণত ৫টি লাইনে শেষ করতে হবে ( কিন্তু কবিতার ক্ষেত্রে বড়ো করে লিখতে হবে তাই বেশি লাইন ব্যবহার করতে হবে। সাধারণত এক থেকে দেড় পেইজ লিখতে হবে।
- শুরু হেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত কবিতায় কি ঘটেছে তাই বলতে হবে। বাড়িয়ে বলা যাবে না।
- Summary টি খুব ভাল করে প্রেজেন্ট করতে হবে । (মনে রাখতে ভাল নাম্বার পেতে ভাল করে ফুটিয়ে তোলার বিকল্প নাই)।
- Summary হবে তিন পার্টে । ১ম অংশে পরিচিতি, ২য় অংশে আলোচনা আর সব শেষ অংশে মন্তব্য।
- কিন্তু কোন প্যারা করা যাবে না।
- Summary লেখার ক্ষেত্রে ধারাবাহিকতা রাখতে হবে।
নিচে একটি উদাহারন দিয়ে বুঝানো হলোঃ

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake darling buds of May,
And summer lease hath all too short a date,
Sometimes too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometimes declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor Shall death brag thou wonder'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Summary:
The poem deals with the profound love for a friend which is written by the Great Poet William Shakespeare. In the beginning of the poem the poet said that he wanted to compare his friend with the days of summer but he was confused that his friend might be more fair and lovely than the days of Summer. Because the summer has so many negative qualities where his friend has no any negative sides. Summer is short lived. Summer's winds is harmful for the trees and buds. Sometimes the light of summer has gone but his friend is always enlightened. Then the poet said that his friend is an immortal one. Even death cannot brag him in its shade. He will live by the lines of the poet. He cherishes that so long men stay in the world and they can see, his friend will be remembered. This gives him a eternal life. Thus, the poem is really a remarkable poem for praising friend and show love for him.
